A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd was officially registered on November 14, 1909. Its roots lie in Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands. The first workshop was located on Retreat Street.

The brand was founded by four brothers: Harry, George, Joe, and Albert John Stevens. The initials A.J.S. come from Albert John Stevens (known as "Jack"), as he was the only one of the brothers to have two first names.

The first official AJS motorcycle was presented at the Olympia Motor Cycle Show in 1910 – a single-cylinder model with 298 cc.

AJS became world famous thanks to its successes at the Isle of Man TT. It won the junior race as early as 1914. After World War II, AJS built the legendary 7R "Boy Racer," which remains an icon among classic racing motorcycles to this day.JS became world famous thanks to its successes at the Isle of Man TT.
