Husaberg wanted to build the lightest and most powerful four-stroke off-road motorcycles in the world—at a time when the terrain was still dominated almost exclusively by two-stroke engines. The machines were so good that Husaberg won several world championship titles in motocross and enduro in the 1990s (the Belgian Joël Smets is legendary).

In 2013, KTM's parent company (Pierer Industrie AG) acquired the Husqvarna brand from BMW. Initially, development remained in Sweden, while production moved to Austria (Mattighofen).
Later, development was also relocated entirely to Austria. Husaberg often served as a "testing ground" for KTM's bold technical concepts.
One of the most striking features of the KTM era was the 70° engine introduced in 2009. The cylinder was tilted almost flat forward to bring the rotating masses of the crankshaft into the center of the motorcycle. The goal was to achieve handling that was as easy as that of a two-stroke.
Since Husqvarna was a much better-known name worldwide than Husaberg, it was decided to merge the two brands under the motto "We bring together what belongs together."
The Husaberg brand was discontinued (the last model year was 2014). Technically speaking, the "new" Husqvarnas from 2014 onwards were based directly on Husaberg technology, but once again bore the old Swedish logo.

In summary: Husaberg was Husqvarna's "rebellious daughter" that shook up the four-stroke world for 25 years, only to be reintegrated into the parent brand in the end.
