Foundet:1975
The company was founded by entrepreneur Guido Borghin and Giuliano Galliazzo (a technician who had previously worked for Laverda). The name "Gabor" is composed of the first letters of their surnames (Galliazzo & Borghin). The company's headquarters and workshop were located in Dueville (province of Vicenza), Italy.
The Gabor brand was officially launched in 1975 after the founders took over and restructured the remains of the CMK brand (which had been active in the early 1970s). The first motorcycle was presented in 1976.
Gabor placed great importance on the design of the chassis. The frames were designed in-house. Gabor relied on the expertise of Bruno Müller, a renowned frame builder who had previously worked with the Müller/Coller brand.
Closed: 1980
The Gabor brand ceased operations in 1980. This marked the complete closure of motorcycle production. There was no takeover by another manufacturer or continuation of the brand under a new name.
Reasons for the end:
- Market environment: A general downturn in the off-road sports market at the end of the 1970s ("Venti freddi" / cold winds in the market).
- Legislation: Tighter regulations for riding on off-road trails and paths in Italy, which caused a massive slump in demand for enduro machines (Regolarità).
- Technology: Delayed resolution of reliability issues with the engines of the first series and a prototype of the 125cc class that never made it to production.
Co-founder Guido Borghin is now known as a collector and preserves history in his private museum (Collezione Borghin) in Veneto, where numerous Gabor models are preserved.
