Scorpa presents the first result of its collaboration with Yamaha: the SY 250 Racing. It uses a two-stroke engine specially developed by Yamaha for Scorpa (based on the proven technology of the Yamaha TYZ 250).
Alfer presents the VR 250, a modern enduro bike with a Rotax engine.
Sherco launches the first motorcycle under the name Bultaco Sherco.
Morini Franco Motori bought back the naming rights to Moto Morini (which at that time belonged to the Ducati/Cagiva Group). Under the leadership of Franco Morini's son, Maurizio Morini, large, independent motorcycles are once again being developed.
KTM Italy S.r.l. is established as an official subsidiary for sales, but continues to work closely with Farioli's infrastructure at its Gorle location.
Piaggio discontinued the production of motorized Puch two-wheelers.

Five years after winning the 250cc world championship title and subsequently moving to America, Greg Alberty has finally made it here too. He became the Suzuki US champion in the outdoors.
Sebastian Tortelli did not defend his title as 250cc world champion, but instead went to the USA to join Factory Honda. Like Greg Albertyn before him, he moved to the USA as world champion. Tortelli shocked the US scene at the season opener in Glen Helen. He won both races and left the US stars trailing in his wake. People thought he would win the championship with ease. But in the second race in Hangtown, he crashed heavily and injured his wrist. This forced him to take a long break and completely ruined his chances of winning the title.
