Venetian industrialist Federico Fregnan acquires the trademark rights to Fantic. He relocates the company headquarters to Dosson di Casier (province of Treviso). 
The company expanded massively by purchasing an aluminum forge and a factory for high-performance coolers.

Transitional year with completely new class divisions:

  • In "Motocross GP," 250cc 2-stroke machines are allowed to compete against 450cc 4-stroke machines.
  • The 125cc World Championship was renamed the 125 GP, and 250cc 4-stroke bikes were also allowed to compete.
  • In the 650cc World Championship, 650cc 4-stroke bikes compete against 500cc 2-stroke bikes.

This year, for the first time, the races were held on the same day and at the same location as the other GP classes in order to streamline the format.

On June 8, Pit Beirer suffers a serious crash at the GP in Bulgaria (Sevlievo). The crash leaves him paraplegic.
