Provisional determination of countries for AM driver's licenses:

  • Italy - 14 years, replaced the old "Patentino" (moped certificate), which was already available from the age of 14.
  • France - 14 years old, replaced the BSR (Brevet de Sécurité Routière). France was a pioneer in allowing 14-year-olds to obtain a license.
  • Austria - 15 years, the "moped license" was transferred to class AM.
  • Spain – 15 years, In Spain, the age for mopeds was raised to 15 (previously 14) even before the AM harmonization.
  • Germany - 16 years
The EU-wide harmonized driver's license class AM is officially introduced. It is based on the 3rd EU Driver's License Directive (2006/126/EC) and replaces the previous national classes M (moped) and S (trikes/quads up to 45 km/h) in Germany. European standard. While the standard minimum age is 16, countries may lower this to 14 or raise it to 18. The definition of category AM is strictly defined in technical terms:

  • Engine capacity: Maximum 50 cc for combustion engines.
  • Power: Maximum 4 kW for electric motors.
  • Speed: Maximum design speed of 45 km/h.
  • Vehicle types: Two- and three-wheeled mopeds and light four-wheeled motor vehicles (light quads) up to 425 kg unladen weight.
