Roger de Coster will become Motorsport Director North America for the entire group (KTM and Husqvarna). He will hand over direct management of the KTM team to Ian Harrison.

Roger de Coster takes over as Race Team Manager of the US KTM factory team with the aim of leading the brand, which has had little success in the USA, to the top. He brings Ian Harrisson with him from Suzuki to KTM. South African Harrisson started out as a mechanic for Greg Albertyn and became world champion with him. KTM offers De Coster exactly what Honda and Suzuki had denied him: complete freedom to make decisions and a massive budget.

Roger de Coster's contract with Suzuki is expiring. When he asks for a meeting with Suzuki management, they refer him to Yoshimura, the tuning partner that co-operates the team. De Coster feels this is a demotion, as he works for Suzuki and not for Yoshimura. Due to the economic crisis at the time, Suzuki is acting extremely cautiously in Japan and the US and only offers him a one-year contract extension. But de Coster wants security and a budget to remain competitive in the long term. Suzuki, however, refuses to make any long-term commitments.

Roger de Coster becomes executive editor at US magazine Dirt Bike Magazine. He writes monthly columns ("Classic De Coster") and is also active as a test rider. He enjoys objectively evaluating motorcycles of all brands, which gives him a new perspective on the technology of the 1990s.

Honda does not offer Roger de Coster a new contract as team manager, but instead wants to push him into a purely administrative advisory role, far away from the racetrack. He therefore leaves Honda.

Roger De Coster ended his active career with a GP victory in Luxembourg in his final season.

Roger de Coster can bring the world championship title back to Suzuki.

Suzuki has adapted De Coster's factory 370cc bike to the FIM minimum weight regulations with a new frame and modified weight distribution in order to improve its nervous handling.

Suzuki signs Roger de Coster for the 500cc class. The offer was originally made to Sylvain Geboers, who decided to remain in the 250cc class.

Roger won his first race on Suzuki at the season opener in Italy. After retiring in Sittendorf, he was able to regain the lead with further victories and defend it until the end.

Roger underscores Belgium's dominance in this class with his third place finish.
