Starting in the 1986 season, all motorcycles must be based on a homologated production model. The main frame, swing arm, engine housing, and cylinders must essentially correspond to the production parts. Manufacturers were required to produce a certain minimum number (homologation) of these models for free sale to ensure that the technology did not remain exclusive. Among other things, this was intended to reduce the enormous costs of developing handmade prototypes that bore no resemblance to production models. The aim was to give private riders and manufacturers with smaller budgets a better chance.
